Maps

Publicly available map layers for the towns of Knox County and other mapping and GIS resources of interest can be found by clicking the appropriate link in the menu at the right.

The KML (and KMZ, a compressed form of KML) map layers available here have been tested to work with Google Earth version 5.0 on both Windows and Mac OS platforms. Google Earth is currently downloadable and useable for free. KML and KMZ layers may also be imported into ArcGIS Explorer, a proprietary and powerful tool for manipulating GIS data, as well as NASA WorldWind, Adobe PhotoShop, AutoCAD, and Yahoo! Pipes.

Most map layers contain "placemarks" or points defined by precise latitude and longitude coordinates and marked by a meaning-specific icon, for example

When a placemark icon is clicked, a "balloon" appears. Balloons may contain information assets such as images, text, and links to further information:

Other maps may contain polygons showing areas of interest such as flood plains, habitats, and predicted wind drifts. Still others may contain simple lines representing evacuation routes or town boundaries.
